Received an Income Tax Notice? A Calm, Step-by-Step Response
Most income tax notices ask for information or clarification, not penalties. Here is how to read one, what to gather and how to respond on time.

A notice from the Income Tax Department is unsettling, but most notices are routine: a mismatch between your return and the information the department holds, a request for documents, or an intimation after processing. The important thing is to read it carefully and respond before the deadline.
Step 1: Confirm the notice is genuine
Log in to the income tax e-filing portal and check that the notice appears under your pending actions. Genuine notices carry a document identification number (DIN). Never act on a notice received only by email or message without verifying it on the portal.
Step 2: Identify what it is about
Note the section under which it is issued, the assessment year it relates to, and exactly what is being asked. Common reasons include:
- Income shown in your AIS or Form 26AS but missing from your return
- A difference in TDS credit claimed
- A request to verify high-value transactions
- A defective return that needs correction
Step 3: Note the deadline
Every notice has a response date. Missing it can lead to the matter being decided without your input. If you need more time, an adjournment can usually be requested through the portal.
Step 4: Gather supporting documents
Collect the return filed, computation of income, Form 16 or other income statements, bank statements and any documents relating to the specific query.
Step 5: Respond clearly and completely
Answer the question that was asked, attach the evidence, and keep a copy of everything submitted along with the acknowledgement.
If a notice is unclear, or involves a significant amount, professional help with the response is worth it. Share the notice when you get in touch so the review can start immediately.
